How long does it take to self-publish a book?
A lot of authors want to know how long it will take to get their book published after they’ve submitted it to us.
Every book-baby is different, so the following is only a guideline as to how long it will take to publish your book with us.
Remember that these timeframes are not set in stone – there are many variables that can occur during the publishing and printing process that can throw a spanner in the works, with are neither our fault nor the printer’s fault. Please bear this in mind when working with a publisher.
The proofreading/editing process
Proofreading and editing are two separate processes. You can find out more about them here.
The amount of time it will take to proofread your book depends on how well-written your book is when it comes to us and how many words there are in your book. Some books need more or less work than others.
The better you can get it on your own, i.e. the fewer mistakes, the more cost-effective, and quick, the process will be.
As a general guide, you should allow about a month to go through the editorial process. For books that need less work, it may take about two weeks for us to get the book up to the standard required for publishing.
Formatting & design
To format and design your book generally takes another month. We’ll be liaising with you during the process to ensure that you like the cover design we come up with, and that you’re satisfied our designers have captured the essence of what your book is about. We’ll offer you a few options to choose from.
The process can take a little less or more time, depending on your input, and how quickly you sign off on our designs.
It may also take more time if you’re producing a print version of the book, as well as an e-book, as these are formatted differently.
Publishing & printing your book
The actual publishing of your book is a short process, although we’ll also be carrying out administrative tasks in the background such as registering your book with the legal deposit library. This won’t affect how long it takes to publish your book.
However, printing may take around eight working days – and for specialist titles, you should allow three to four weeks for the printer to produce your book.
The whole process of publishing and printing your book generally takes approximately one to two months.
In total, it should take around three to four months from start to finish to produce your self-published book, although, as mentioned, it may take longer.
We advise all our authors to build in more time to publish your book, in case of, for example, any unforeseen hiccups with the printing press.
